  Major congregational quake in Southern California

  a friend of mine told me about a huge elders meeting in southern california.

  the subject was the relocation and dissolution of some congregations; it seems that this is the result of some project that has been going on for some time and is going to be implemented right now.. please let me know if this is happening all over the country?.

  Awesome news for the Buckeye State! Maybe my hall will be dissolved. We only average about 50-60 a meeting. The funny thing is that we share a hall with a congregation that is twice our size.

  a rape victim was forced to listen to herself being raped while the elders stopped and started the tape claiming she was consenting.

  even though during one of the assaults she was duct-taped, gagged and had a pillowcase over her head.

  To beard or not to beard...

  ...that is the question our circuit overseer asked the elders.

  to elaborate, the agenda for the co meeting with the elders had an item about the "beard paragraph" (sept watchtower p21 para 17) which i assumed would be an instruction to not use any with beards on the platform.

  instead he genuinely wanted to know if we would recommend a brother if he had a beard but everything else was ok. he kept pressing until he got 100% saying yes - a beard isn't a problem.

  new topic due to new topic direction - immigration rather than economic - of course they might be related.... you often hear that in the us the jw growth is in the foreign language congregations.

  which is interesting because..... 25% of jw's are first generation immigrants (ie born abroad).

  he went to college, got his bachelor’s degree and was a school teacher for many years.

  during that time, he was an elder in his congregation, had many privileges and cared for his young family.

  This brother is one of the few that I can talk to and not have to worry about him turning me in. How messed up is that? I’m in my 30’s and I have to worry about getting turned in!

  A few weeks ago, I was chatting with a brother who is well into his 80’s. He went to college, got his Bachelor’s Degree and was a school teacher for many years. During that time, he was an elder in his congregation, had many privileges and cared for his young family. This was back in the 1950’s. Nobody ever gave him a hard time about “higher education”. He was saying that the witnesses prior to the late 1960’s could go to college and nobody (usually) would give him/her a hard time about it. Very few people at that time went anyway.

  So I asked him what changed the org’s stance on college. He told me that the Vietnam War changed everything. In the late 1960’s many college campuses were hotspots for protests, drug abuse, violence and free spirit. So at that time, the general feeling about going to college was frowned upon. The reason he gave was that since all of this was going on at colleges throughout the U.S. in the late 1960’s, Christians should stay away from college altogether.

  After the Vietnam War, the org never changed their anti-college stance. Even now, the org still uses drug abuse and free spirit as reason to not go to college. They have also added that it takes away from spiritual pursuits and that it opens your mind to “the world’s thinking”.

  The funny thing is that the org always suggests going into the trades. I have worked around the unions and trades. Believe me when I tell you, I have heard some of the worst language in and around the trades. Drug and alcohol abuse also runs rampant. If you are a laborer, you sacrifice your body every day and can be unemployed for up to 20-30 weeks a year. Please don’t get me wrong; I admire tradesmen and women and the work that they do. My point is that if you join the trades, is that really a “better” alternative to college?

  In conclusion, I never made the Vietnam connection to college until I spoke to this brother. What are your thoughts?

  Will the UN turn on Religion?

  as all witnesses know, the opening gambit of the great tribulation will occur when the united nations turns on organized religion to devastate them and leave them naked of people and resources.

  however, as jehovah's judgement day has been spoken of as being "imminent", the question that can be fairly asked ... 'is the united nations organization actually in a position to act as god's destroyer of false religion?

  while i have no doubt that most within that organization had in the past tried to make the lives of the desperate better, the united nations has unfortunately now become a weak and underfunded political eunuch.

  Question about an elder and if I am crazy

  ok so i have a question.

  i was a very, very true believer until i saw the child molesters in my hall and how that whole thing was handled.. my husband is older than i am and had been an elder for 12 when we married.

  so fast forward to 06, we are in a hall where i thought all the elders were ok at the worst and great at the best.

  Despite the issues that my wife and I are having, there is no way in h*** that I would let any dude treat her like that. How can a man let some a**hole treat his wife like garbage IN FRONT OF HIM and not do anything about it??
